Grass and Forage Fed Black Angus Beef

Beef cattle are born and raised on the farm from the registered Black Angus herd the Mangans have been developing for over 40 years. The steaks, roasts and ground beef found in the farm stand are grass and forage fed, and finished with a grain ration at the farm. The steers spend their whole life at our place, or just down the road at the summer pasture.

Our Story

Dick and Barbara Mangan, both US Forest Service Employees, started a small farm in eastern Oregon to raise their children Shannon and Patrick, some horses, some sheep, and chickens in the mid 1970’s, trying to live closer to the land. In 1980, Barbara, who was a horse breeder and trainer on the side, traded a young trained horse with an area cattle rancher in exchange for two registered black Angus cattle; one for Shannon and one for Patrick.

The Mangan Angus herd grew from those two bred cows into a small herd of pedigreed and registered stock from that day forward. Both Shannon and Patrick were active in 4-H, FFA, and the Oregon Junior Angus Association, learning every step in the process of caring for, selecting good quality genetics, and raising quality seedstock for other farmers and ranchers.

The Mangan family followed Richard’s Forest Service career to Missoula in 1989 and set up their new farm on Big Flat, a few miles west of Missoula. They’ve been there ever since, raising quality registered Angus bulls and heifers.

Patrick, the youngest child in the family, followed his own agricultural and natural resources career to New York, Utah, Alaska, and Oregon over the years, before coming back to Montana to be close to home and help out on the farm more, beginning the process of transitioning it from his dad’s generation to his own.

The orchard, new flock of sheep, and goats were all Patrick’s idea for the farm and its new diverse offerings of lamb, goat meat, and fresh fruit. The goal to raise and finish out a couple of steers raised on the ranch started in 2019 and first came to completion in 2020, adding to the market possibilities for the beef cattle.

The Mangans kicked around how to best market lamb meat to local consumers for a couple of years, and chose to target their market to a very local and immediate group of neighbors, people who have driven by and seen the animals in the fields. In the fall of 2020, the Mangan Ranch Farm Stand opened for business, marketing local raised and processed cattle, sheep, and goats to Missoula area consumers.

Our Animal Processing Partnership

We partner with the Missoula County High Schools Agricultural Education Career Development program for processing and packaging our livestock products. This teaching and learning lab is a true asset to our community, to public education, and to the future of the local meats supply. The teaching and learning processing center at the school is inspected and certified by the Montana Department of Livestock. High school youth enrolled in classes learn valuable skills in a future career track, and process and package the products we sell in our farm stand.
